The Final #NOWTips of 2018 [Free eBook]

For all of those who are celebrating Christmas today – we wish you the very best and brightest this day has to offer.

And whether or not you are celebrating the Nativity today, we hope you get a second to smile about what a year 2018 has been (no, it’s not over yet, but we’re nearly there!).

To help bring a smile to your face today, and maybe to give you a break from doing the dishes, we’ve compiled our final #NOWTIPS tips and tricks of 2018, plus a few freebie ServiceNow resources to get you kick started for the new year.

Let’s jump into the list, with 3 final #NOWTIPS to get you through the holidays and soaring into 2018.

Tip 1: We know boolean operators can be tricky, it’s okay to admit it!

Have you ever had to filter a list using multiple keywords?

Well did you know that there is a special format that the keywords operator uses?

Let’s say we want to show a list of Incidents where records contain the words “phone” OR “cell phone”. The proper way to format this would be to create the Keywords filter using an ‘OR’ or ‘|’ pipe operator directly in the keywords entry box, NOT using two or more separate filter lines.

If you’ve ever tried to build the keywords filter using two separate filter lines in OR format, you may have noticed that the export feature does not work properly. Even though your filter may have returned results, when you try to export them, the dialog says ‘0 of ##’ results exported.

The filter would need to be reworked into one filter line using that operator directly in the text box to enter the terms desired.

Cool huh?

Tip 2: Try creating outbound REST messages.

When creating Outbound REST Messages, variables can be created by wrapping text in a dollar-sign and brackets, like this: `${example}`.

These variables can be used in the Endpoint, HTTP Header, HTTP Query, and Content fields.

After writing your message, simply click the `Auto-generate variables` link to build them. And be sure to click `Preview Script Usage` for some cool, auto-generated code that you can apply in Scripts!

Tip 3: Plagued by virtual tables?

Tables that start with “v_” are _virtual_ tables, and they behave a bit strangely.

The entries are populated upon query, so the `sys_created_on` field will be set to the current time. So don’t worry if you see 681 `v_plugin` entries that were last edited by your account!
